How much does SEO cost for a small business? Most pay roughly €450 to €4,500 a month. That's the band 63% of businesses fall into in Ahrefs' survey of SEO providers, converted from dollars. The average was $2,917 a month, about €2,600.

A one-off project, such as an audit, most often costs €2,200–€4,500. Half of providers charge about €1,800 or less. The most common hourly rate is about €67–€89.

Those are market numbers. The useful question is narrower: what does your money buy, and will one or two new customers a month pay for it?

This guide covers the pricing models, what each budget level gets you, what cheap SEO quietly skips, and how to check if SEO is worth it for your business.

SEO costs for small business at a glance

The best public data is Ahrefs' pricing survey of 439 SEO providers (published in 2023, updated in 2024). It's global and priced in dollars. We've converted at about $1.12 to €1 (the late-October 2026 rate) and rounded.

Pricing model Typical range (approx. €) Most common price Best for
Hourly €65–€180 per hour €67–€89 per hour Advice, one-off fixes
Monthly retainer €220–€8,900 per month €450–€890 per month Steady growth over months
Project or audit Half under €1,800 €2,200–€4,500 A diagnosis and a fix list
Local-focused providers Average about €1,390 per month — One town, one service area

Two warnings before you use this table.

First, the survey doesn't split out Europe in its text. Treat the euro figures as a guide, not a local price list.

Second, the averages are pulled up by big contracts. The single most common monthly fee was the lowest serious band: $501–$1,000, roughly €450–€890.

Bar chart of average monthly SEO retainers by provider type, approx. euros: freelancer €1,200, local-focused provider €1,390, agency €2,860, consultancy €2,900, worldwide-focused provider €3,100.

The four ways SEO is priced

Most providers use one of four models. Many mix them: an audit first, then a monthly fee.

BrightLocal's industry survey shows how common each is. Among agencies, 63% charge a monthly fee based on deliverables. 36% charge per project and 28% charge by the hour. Freelancers spread more evenly across all three.

Hourly

You pay for time. Ahrefs found the most common rate was $75–$100, about €67–€89. Freelancers averaged around €64 an hour. Consultancies averaged around €153.

Experience moves the price. People with 10+ years averaged about €106 an hour. Those with two years or less averaged about €65.

Hourly suits a clear, small job: fix redirects after a redesign, or review a new site before launch. It's poor value for ongoing work, because nobody owns the outcome.

Monthly retainer

You pay a fixed fee for an agreed set of work each month. This is the most common model for small businesses.

Ahrefs' averages were about €1,200 for freelancers and about €2,860 for agencies. Experience mattered here too: around €1,375 a month for newer providers and around €3,250 for those with 5–10 years.

A retainer only makes sense if the deliverables are written down. "Ongoing optimisation" is not a deliverable. "Two service pages rewritten, one article, Google Business Profile updated, monthly report" is.

Project or audit

You pay once for a defined piece of work. The most common project fee in the survey was $2,501–$5,000, about €2,200–€4,500. But half of providers charged $2,000 or less, about €1,800.

Projects fit businesses that want a plan and will do the work in-house. They also fit a new site that needs setting up properly once.

Local SEO packages

Local SEO focuses on one area. Think "dentist Tartu" or "bakery near me". The work centres on your Google Business Profile, reviews, local pages and citations.

In Ahrefs' data, providers serving local clients averaged about €1,390 a month. Providers serving worldwide clients averaged about €3,100. Local work is cheaper because the competition is smaller and the site usually is too.

Google says local ranking comes down to relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence includes links and reviews. Google also states you can't pay for a better local ranking. So any package that promises a top-three map spot is guessing. Our local SEO checklist covers what you can do yourself.

How much does SEO cost for a small business per month, level by level

Here's a simple way to read any quote. Divide the monthly fee by a fair hourly rate. That's roughly how many hours of work you get.

At €65–€90 an hour, €300 buys three to five hours a month. That is not much. A proper technical check of a small site can take that alone.

The table below is our estimate, built on that maths and on how long the tasks take us. It is not survey data.

Monthly budget Hours (approx.) What you can realistically expect
Under €300 3–4 A report, small on-page tweaks, profile upkeep. No content, no links.
€300–€800 4–12 Technical fixes, a few pages optimised, Google Business Profile, light content.
€800–€2,000 10–30 Keyword map, 2–4 new or rewritten pages a month, early digital PR, reporting tied to leads.
€2,000+ 25+ Several languages, bigger sites, regular PR and links, AI search work.

In our experience, most small businesses with one location and one language sit in the €500–€1,500 band. You need enough hours for content, because content is what ranks.

What cheap SEO leaves out

A €99-a-month SEO package exists. It usually sends a nice PDF. Here's what tends to be missing.

  • A real technical audit. Indexing, redirects, canonicals, speed and mobile. If Google can't index a page, nothing else matters. See why your website isn't showing on Google.
  • Keyword research tied to what you sell. Ranking for words nobody buys from is a vanity win.
  • Content. Writing or rewriting pages takes hours. Cheap packages skip it or use mass-produced AI pages. Google's spam policy names "scaled content abuse" for exactly that.
  • Links from real sites. Bought links break Google's link spam policy. Earning mentions from press, partners and suppliers takes time. That's why it's expensive.
  • Local work. Profile, photos, review requests, service-area pages.
  • Reporting on leads. Rankings are a means. Calls, bookings and orders are the point.
  • AI search. How you show up in AI Overviews and assistants. More on this below.

Watch for these red flags in any quote:

  1. A guaranteed #1 ranking. Google's own hiring advice says no one can guarantee it.
  2. Secret methods they won't explain.
  3. "We'll submit your site to 500 search engines."
  4. Asking for full owner access when read-only would do. Google suggests giving read-only Search Console access for an audit.
  5. A cold email that says they "found problems" on your site.

What a good quote includes

Ask every provider to put these in writing before you compare prices:

  • The deliverables each month, in numbers: pages, articles, fixes, outreach.
  • Who does the work, and whether any of it is outsourced.
  • What they need from you: access, photos, approvals, time.
  • How they report, and which numbers they report on.
  • The notice period, and who owns the content and accounts if you leave.

Two quotes at €800 can buy very different amounts of work. This list makes the difference visible.

What does an SEO audit cost?

By our estimate, an SEO audit for a small business costs roughly €700 to €4,500. The low end is a single-language site of under a hundred pages. The high end is a big shop, several languages or a site with old migration problems.

A useful audit leaves you with three things:

  • A list of what's broken, ranked by impact.
  • A keyword and page plan: which page should rank for which search.
  • A short list you can act on this month, with or without the auditor.

If the output is a 90-page automated export, you've paid for a tool's report. Ask for a sample before you buy.

Before paying for anything, a free check is a fair first step. A good one tells you in 15 minutes if you have an indexing problem or just a content problem. Ours is at free website check.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

Yes, if one extra customer a month covers the fee within a year. No, if your margins are thin and your market is tiny.

Do the maths before you sign

Here's a worked example. The numbers are illustrative, not from a real client.

A bathroom fitter earns about €900 profit on an average job. SEO costs €790 a month, so €9,480 a year. That's about 11 extra jobs a year to break even. Roughly one a month.

Now flip it for a café selling €6 coffees with €3 margin. The same budget needs over 3,000 extra coffees a year. SEO can still help a café. But the budget should be much smaller, and focused on Google Business Profile and reviews.

The formula:

  1. Average profit per new customer.
  2. Divide your yearly SEO cost by that figure.
  3. Ask: can search plausibly bring that many extra customers in 12–18 months?

Allow for time

SEO is slow to start. Technical fixes can show in weeks. New pages often take months to rank. Ahrefs found the average #1 result is about five years old. Budget for at least six months before judging. Our guide on how long SEO takes breaks this down month by month.

If you need customers this month, ads are faster. We compare the two in SEO vs Google Ads.

Factor in AI search

AI summaries now sit above many results. They take clicks.

Pew Research tracked 900 US adults' Google searches. With an AI summary on the page, people clicked a normal result on 8% of visits. Without one, it was 15%. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary.

Ahrefs found something similar. Where an AI Overview appears, the top-ranking page gets about 58% fewer clicks than expected.

What that means for your budget:

  • Informational searches ("what is…") are losing clicks fastest.
  • Searches with buying or local intent ("bathroom fitter Tallinn price") still send customers.
  • Being cited in the AI answer matters. That needs clear facts, structured data and mentions on other sites.

So spend on pages that sell, not on generic blog traffic.

We did it on our own site first

In October 2026 we set up asfari.digital from scratch. We added it to Search Console as a domain property. We submitted a sitemap, and Google discovered 54 pages from it. We set up IndexNow for Bing and Yandex and added JSON-LD schema.

PageSpeed now scores 92–95 on mobile and 100 for SEO. That's the technical base. Rankings come after, and we'll report them honestly when there's something to report.
