How to Make a Seamless Loop Video With AI (No Visible Jump)

Most AI loops jump at the seam. Here is the start/end-frame method we use, the cheats that work, and a five-point seam check.

To make a seamless loop video with AI, give an image-to-video model the same picture as both the start frame and the end frame, prompt for motion that naturally returns to where it began, then check the seam frame by frame and trim any duplicate frame before export. If the model will not cooperate, a ping-pong loop or a short cross-fade can hide the join, but only for certain kinds of motion.

What makes a perfect loop video

A loop fails at the seam in three ways: something jumps position, the light pops, or the texture (grain, water pattern) reshuffles. A perfect loop has none of these.

The end frame arrives exactly where the start frame began, so the cut is invisible.

Motion that loops well is cyclical by nature:

  • a product on a slow turntable (one full rotation)
  • fabric, smoke, fog or liquid drifting in place
  • light sweeping across a surface and returning
  • a camera orbiting or breathing in and back out

Motion with a direction (someone walking, a glass filling) loops badly. Pick a different shot.

Method 1: start and end frames (the true loop)

Several image-to-video tools let you set the final frame as well as the first. Kling calls it Start and End Frames and says it works best with visually similar images and clips within about five seconds; large differences can cause a shot change. Luma added a dedicated Loops feature to Dream Machine in July 2024. Runway has moved keyframe work from the retired Gen-3 models into its Animate Frames app.

Our workflow:

  1. Make one strong still at final quality. Everything downstream inherits its look.
  2. Use it as both start and end frame. Prompt for motion that returns: "camera slowly orbits 20 degrees left and back", "silk drifts up and settles".
  3. Watch for the do-nothing trap. With identical frames, models sometimes return a near-still clip. Push the prompt toward visible motion, or use method 2.
  4. Generate in batches. Expect to throw most outputs away. NPR reported that the team behind one widely shared AI ad made roughly 300–400 generations to get 15 usable clips.

The two-leg trick. For longer or more interesting loops, make a second still (B) that is a close variation of the first (A). Generate A→B, then B→A, and join them. You get a 10-second loop with a real arc, and each leg stays inside the short-clip sweet spot.

The same keyframe-first approach powers our AI product video from an image workflow; loops are just the version where the end frame is the start frame.

Method 2: ping-pong and cross-fade cheats

When you only have a one-way clip, two cheats can close the loop.

Method How it works Works for Fails on
True loop Last frame = first frame Everything Takes the most generations
Ping-pong Play forward, then reversed Camera drift, slow orbits, light sweeps Smoke, water, cloth, anything with gravity (reverse looks wrong)
Cross-fade Blend the last 0.5–1 s into the first 0.5–1 s Fog, abstract textures, soft gradients Hard edges and products (you see ghosting)
Cut on motion Hide the seam behind a fast move or flash Social ads, edits with titles Calm website heroes

Ping-pong is the classic looping video maker shortcut: invisible on a slow camera move, obvious on rising smoke. Cross-fades suit atmosphere; on a chrome bottle you get two bottles for half a second.

Check the seam before you export

Do this every time, even when the loop "looks fine" in the generator preview.

  1. Loop it in a real player for a full minute.
  2. Stack the last and first frames in your editor and set the top layer to Difference blend. Anything that isn't black is a jump.
  3. Scrub the last 10 frames for a light or exposure pop. AI models drift in brightness over a clip.
  4. Look at the grain. If noise or water texture reshuffles at the join, add a light uniform grain over the whole clip to mask it.
  5. Drop the duplicate frame. If the last frame is identical to the first, delete one. Playing it twice causes a tiny but visible hitch.

Exporting a seamless loop video

  • Length: 6–12 s for a website hero, 5–15 s for social. Keep the loop a whole number of cycles.
  • Upscale and clean before encoding, not after.
  • Web: H.264 MP4 with no audio track, 2–4 Mbps, plus a poster. Full specs, file-size maths and the HTML snippet are in our website background video guide.
  • Social: export 9:16, 4:5 and 1:1 crops from the same master. Platforms loop short clips on their own.
  • Keep the master (ProRes or high-bitrate MP4). Every future crop, colorway and text overlay starts from it.

That last point is where loops pay off for ads: one clean master can become a dozen variations, which is the fastest antidote to ad creative fatigue.
